Hot Baryons in Supercluster Filaments
نویسنده
چکیده
Most of the baryons in the local universe are “missing” in that they are not in galaxies or in the previously detected gaseous phases. These missing baryons are predicted to be in a moderately hot phase, 10–10 K, largely in the form of giant cosmic filaments that connect the denser virialized clusters and groups of galaxies. Models show that the highest covering fraction of such filaments occurs in superclusters. To determine whether such filaments exist, we have begun a project to search for UV absorption against AGNs projected behind possible supercluster filaments. Using data from the HST and FUSE archives along with new observations, we have detected UV absorption within about 1300 km/s of seven supercluster sightlines out of a sample of eight. The likelihood of such detections being generated by chance is less than 10.

Large-scale mass distribution in the Illustris simulation
Observations at low redshifts thus far fail to account for all of the baryons expected in the Universe according to cosmological constraints. A large fraction of the baryons presumably resides in a thin and warm–hot medium between the galaxies, where they are difficult to observe due to their low densities and high temperatures. Cosmological simulations of structure formation can be used to ver...
متن کاملThe Search for the Missing Baryons at Low Redshift
The baryon content of the universe is known from Big Bang nucleosynthesis and cosmic microwave background considerations, yet at low redshift, only about one-tenth of these baryons lie in galaxies or the hot gas seen in galaxy clusters and groups. Models posit that these “missing baryons” are in gaseous form in overdense filaments that connect the much denser virialized groups and clusters. Abo...
متن کاملDim Baryons in the Cosmic Web
The distribution of baryons beyond galaxies is descibed. The majority of the baryons, which represent 4% of the cosmic mass and energy budget, lie far from individual galaxies in the diffuse intergalactic medium (IGM). Many of these baryons are in a warm phase that can be probed by quasar absorption in the Lyman-α line of hydrogen. The mature field of quasar spectroscopy can diagnose the locati...
متن کاملThe Pisces-Cetus Supercluster: a remarkable filament of galaxies in the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and Sloan Digital Sky surveys
The Pisces-Cetus supercluster (redshift z∼0.06) is one of the richest nearby (z<0.1) superclusters of galaxies, and emerges as a remarkable filament of galaxies at the edges of the two-degree-field galaxy redshift survey and the ongoing Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We explore the extent of the supercluster on the sky and in redshift space, and map the distribution of its constituent clusters and g...
متن کاملBaryons in the Warm-hot Intergalactic Medium
Approximately 30− 40% of all baryons in the present day universe reside in a warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), with temperatures between 10 < T < 10 K. This is a generic prediction from six hydrodynamic simulations of currently favored structure formation models having a wide variety of numerical methods, input physics, volumes, and spatial resolutions. Most of these warm-hot baryons reside...
